The university of Belgrade was established in 1808, making it the oldest university in Serbia. It is a state run university, founded by Dositej Obradovic and has an emphasis on scientific research. The medical school was founded in 1920, with 850 international students graduating from this institution to date. Nowadays, The university is divided into 31 faculties and the School of Medicine and School of Dental Medicine share a building near the Karađorđev Park, next to several hospitals. Medical degrees are available in English and run for six years, with 24 places available for international students each year.

Belgrade is one of the oldest inhabited cities in Europe believed to have been settled in the 3rd century by celts and is Serbia’s capital city. The city lies at the intersection of the Sava and Danube rivers. The city earned the name ‘white city’ as Slavic settlers believed the fortress looked white from the river. Belgrade is home to the first coffee house (kafana) in Europe. It also has an intricate network of underground caves and tunnels. Amongst more modern buildings you can find buildings influenced by ottoman, neoclassicism and art nouveau periods. Notable sites to visit include Belgrade fortress, the victor monument, Ruzica Church, The Knez Mihailova Street and the National Museum of Serbia.
