Sapienza University of Rome

Founded in 1303 by Pope Boniface VIII, the Sapienza University of Rome is one of the oldest universities in Italy and it has a long legacy of academic excellence to follow. Not only is it one of the oldest universities in Italy, it is also the largest with a student body of 140,000. Inspiringly, its motto ‘Il futuro è passato qui’ translates as ‘the future was here.’ The university has produced six Nobel Prize winners. Their six year medical degrees combine the theoretical aspects of medicine with the practical, patient facing side of the role. Classes at The Sapienza University of Rome take place at several locations throughout the city, including Sapienza’s three specialist hospitals: Policlinico, Sant’Andrea and Latina. It is a highly desirable university and this is reflected in the fact that they admit only 45 students per year on to their medical programmes. Located in central Rome, students have access to 59 libraries and 21 museums.

Catholic University of the Sacred Heart (Rome)

The Catholica University of the Sacred Heart (known as Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Italian) was founded in 1921 and it is the largest private university in Europe with around 41,000 students of which 10% are international. The institution has four campuses including Cremona, Brescia, Piacenza, and Rome. Pope John XXIII officially opened the Medical School in 1961 and the university’s medical programme is prestigious and the university itself ranks within the top 5% worldwide.

Medical degrees are offered in English and last six years.The degree includes fundamental biomedical studies, residency programmes, first aid training, neurosciences and maternal health care before graduating on to surgical studies and training in hospitals. As stipulated in the name, the university is founded with Catholic beliefs and there are some compulsory theological seminars. Notable alumni include Francesco Rubino, Professor of Metabolic Surgery.

Unicamillus International Medical University

Founded in 2017, Unicamillus International Medical University is a modern institution dedicated to furthering student’s knowledge of medicine and physician’s practice. As well as medicine, they offer specialist courses in surgery, midwifery and radiology.  The university’s name originates from Camillus de Lellis, who is the Saint Patron of the ill, nurses, and hospitals.

The medical degree runs over six years and is taught in English. As the university’s name denotes, it consists of an international student body.  The university states that their ambition for medical students is to gain ‘ an education oriented to the community, the territory, the global health challenges and fundamentally to the prevention of disease and the promotion of health and with a humanistic culture in its implications of medical interests.’ In addition to the anatomy lab on campus, Unicamillus has established links with nearby hospitals to allow students the necessary clinical practice they must undertake in order to qualify as experienced, knowledgeable doctors. The university is located 20 minutes from the centre of Rome.
