The tradition of higher education at Pavol-Jozef-Šafárik-University Košice dates back to 1657 when bishop Benedict Kishdy founded an early academy here. The present day university is named after Pavel Jozef Šafárik, a 19th-century Slovak poet and historian. After the second world war there was a shortage of doctors and therefore in 1948, the medical school was founded. Since then, the medical school has established over 70 units including departments, scientific research and specialised facilities. It’s mission is dedicated to ‘educating high-quality physicians and implementing top-quality medical research.’

Study Medicine at Pavol-Jozef-Šafárik-University

The English teaching programme was established 15 years ago and has seen 600 successful medical studies graduates since. The course lasts for six years (12 semesters) and includes a combination of pre-clinical, theoretical and clinical experience. Students attend the Teaching Hospital in Košice for their clinical studies.

Košice is the second largest city in Slovakia and is located near the border of Hungary. The river Hornad runs alongside the city which makes for picturesque views. The city earned the title of European Capital of Culture in 2013 and it boasts many gothic, renaissance and baroque architecture. Sites to visit include Cathedral of St Elizabeth, East Slovak Gallery,St Michael’s Chapel, the Plague Column and Kunsthalle (arthall) amongst many other interesting attractions.
